  • This is a family that settled in Ohio ca 1870, after immigrating from Somersetshire/Wiltshire area. They have remained a small family. Some of the family settled in Richwood, OH, where William Lewis Parrott started the Parrott Implement Company.

Their ancestors can be traced back to a Michael Parrett born in Somerset in the mid 1600's. This family is known as the 'Parrotts of Nunney,' as the family properties in the 1800's were in Nunney, Somerset. This family's DNA is a distant (consistent with a 3-century separation) match to the Parrott family that appeared in Talbot Co., Maryland in the mid 1600's. Thus, it appears the Parrotts of Nunney were not the first of their family to make it across the Atlantic!

Venerable Citizen of Dover Township Has passed Away to His Long Rest
    .

A long and honorable life was ended Tuesday evening by the death of Charles Parrott Sr., who had been a resident of Dover township since the Fall of 1870. His demise was caused by old age, he being 89 years, 6 months and 20 days, almost a score in excess of man's allotted time. Up to the beginning of his last iilness, three weeks ago, Mr. Parrott has enjoyed fairly good health, and he retained his faculties until the end, passing peacefully to sleep shortly before eight o'clock Tuesday evening.

Mr. Parrott was a sturdy son of old England. He was born January 7, 1820, near the town of Frome, in Somersetshire, in which vicinity is the famous Stonehenge, which historians tell us is the ruins of an old structure erected by Druids, many centuries ago. Since the earliest known record the Parrotts have been farmers, and this was the life occupation of Charles, both before and after coming to America.

Vigor and Mrs. A.H. LInville, all of Union county; also Mrs. L.M. Hallett, of Somersetshire, England, who spent five years in this county, but who went back to England in 1875 to care for her grandmother Bown, and was married there. Charles Parrott Jr. is a resident of Marysville and was last Fall elected to his second term as clerk of the courts.

The deceased is also survived by one brother and one sister, viz. Edwin Parrott of Warminster, Wilsshire, England, and Mrs. Anna Reins, of Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales. They are the youngest of the family.

Richard E. Parrott | 1934-2017: Union County judge bucked GOP bigwigs, didn't suffer fools

So the story goes, when Richard E. Parrott was a prosecutor \emdash long before he became a Common Pleas Court judge \emdash Union County had a bit of an organized gambling problem.

And maybe someone approached Parrott and might have once suggested that perhaps he should just look the other way.

Didn't happen, but those who knew him best say it was yet another example of his refusal to bend to pressure, no matter how great it might it be or how powerful the people who applied it.

"He wasn't afraid of anybody or anything," said his son, Marysville attorney Bob Parrott. "He never backed down."

Parrott, who retired from the Union County Common Pleas Court bench in 2009 after serving 18 years, died early Sunday at 83. He had been dealing with a number of health issues since winter, his son said, but had a terrific day Friday. He ate dinner at Bravo, his favorite restaurant, and watched his beloved Cincinnati Reds play on television. He then lost consciousness in his sleep. He was taken to the Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center, where he died.

Parrott was born and raised in Union County, graduated from Ohio State and earned his law degree from Ohio Northern University. He had been a private-practice attorney and prosecutor before taking a municipal court judgeship in 1982 and moving to the Common Pleas bench in 1991.

Known for running his courtroom with an iron fist and demonstrating equal intolerance of nonsense to prosecutors and defense attorneys alike, he mostly toiled in the obscurity of a rural-county judgeship. Until 1997, that is. That's when, in the face of great public pressure from both state and local office holders in his own party, he sentenced the chief of staff of then-Gov. George V. Voinovich to a work-release county jail term.

The now-deceased Paul Mifsud, the man who was Voinovich's right-hand man, had pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of obstructing official business and violating state ethics law in connection with a home remodel in Union County, where he lived.

When Parrott sentenced Mifsud he berated the politically connected powerful people who had sent letters to the court asking for leniency. He called it "influence peddling." He said later in an interview with The Dispatch that it was a difficult time, but that he had no regrets.

Current Common Pleas Judge Don Fraser succeeded Parrott, and said he will miss his old friend's guidance and resolve.

"He didn't hesitate to tell you if you were wrong, but he applied that equally," Fraser said. "He was a tremendous mentor to me."

Upon retiring, Parrott never really looked back. He guided historical tours at the county courthouse, followed the Buckeyes as a rabid fan, and traveled the world.

"He learned to enjoy life and he was happy," Fraser said.

Parrott is survived by his wife, May; their children, grandchildren, a great-grandchild and two siblings.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no public service, but the Union County Bar Association will honor him with a private memorial in August.
